Clients often spend weeks on a paint colour and ten minutes on lighting. It should be the other way around — light changes how every colour in the room reads.
Three layers, always
Ambient light fills the room, task light illuminates work, and accent light adds depth and drama. A single overhead fitting gives you none of this.
Warm or cool?
2700K is warm and cosy for living spaces; 3000K is crisp and clean for kitchens and bathrooms. Never mix temperatures in one sightline — it looks accidental.
Dimmers are not a luxury
A dimmer on every circuit costs little and transforms the room from day to night. It is the single best-value upgrade in a renovation.
Light the walls, not the floor
Washing a wall with light makes a room feel larger and softer. Uplighters, wall lights and picture lights all do this better than a ceiling downlight.
Plan it early
Lighting positions must be decided before the electrician first-fixes the wiring. Bring it into the design conversation at the very start, not after the plasterboard goes up.
